If you’re sourcing machined parts, the fastest way to get accurate pricing and lead times is to send the right information up front. Here’s a practical checklist you can use before requesting a quote from a precision machine shop.

1) Share the right files

• 2D drawing (PDF) with tolerances and notes

• 3D model (STEP preferred) when available

• Revision level and any change history

2) Define material and certifications

• Material spec (ex: 6061-T6, 4140, 304 SS)

• Heat treat, plating, anodize, passivation, etc.

• Cert requirements (material certs, inspection reports, PPAP if needed)

3) Clarify tolerances and critical features
